Our firm was recently welcomed into the Texas Verdicts Hall of Fame published by Texas Lawyer newspaper. This award comes after our firm achieved a $9.3 million victory against the Episcopal School of Dallas in the major sexual abuse case that made headlines throughout the state.
The Aldous Law firm was founded by noted trial lawyer Charla Aldous. The honor was given at a dinner hosted at the Ritz-Carlton in Dallas on November 12. A supplement published in the December 9 issue of Texas Lawyer newspaper covers details about this honor.
Of the induction, Ms. Aldous said: “We are, of course, gratified to see our hard work recognized by our colleagues in the legal profession. But the true reward is seeing justice prevail, and in this case, it did. Based on what my client experienced, she will never be the same, but at the very least, we can be fairly confident another young girl won’t be similarly victimized there.”
Sexual Abuse Case Against the Episcopal School of Dallas
The case—John Doe, et al. v. The Episcopal School of Dallas Inc.—took place in 2011. Ms. Aldous was the attorney for “Jane Doe II” and her family. The girl was only 16 years old when an older teacher was discovered with her in an inappropriate relationship. The teacher, Nathan Campbell, was allowed to resign. Shortly after, Miss Doe’s father was given the choice of taking his daughter out of school or she would be expelled.
Ms. Aldous fought for the family, arguing that the school had wrongfully expelled the girl. The jury agreed that the Episcopal School of Dallas was guilty of gross negligence and awarded an $8.6 million verdict in compensatory damages with an additional sum of punitive damages totaling $700,000, which reached a total of $9.6 million. The parties then resolved the case in a confidential settlement.
