Shapiro v. Alle Processing

Aldous Law

Workplace Accident Resulting in Serious Injury

Video Transcript: "I'll never forget the first time I met Rabbi Shapiro. And I went in to shake his hand and he goes, 'Oh you can't touch me. The only woman that I can touch is my wife.' And I said, 'Ok, let's figure this out. I'm your lawyer, you can't touch me, and you want me to represent you in this case?' He said, 'You bet.' And I asked him why and he said, 'Cause I heard you're the toughest there is and I just want somebody like you fighting on my side."

Rabbi Peretz Shapiro took a job at a Fort Worth slaughterhouse, simply hoping to make a few extra dollars to support his family. Alle Processing Corp. hired him on a freelance basis to help supervise its kosher meat processing operation.

But Alle provided no formal training for Rabbi Shapiro and no safety instructions for him to follow as he worked near the plant’s heavy equipment. As he stood next to that equipment, the rabbi’s right arm was crushed and almost severed. Doctors were able to save the arm, but the rabbi suffered permanent damage.

Following the accident, Alle representatives came to visit Rabbi Shapiro in the hospital, not because they were concerned for his well-being, but because they wanted him to sign documents that would have made him a company employee, not an independent contractor, which he was.

As an employee, Alle’s responsibility—and financial loss—would have been much less.

But Rabbi Shapiro didn’t sign. Instead, he contacted Aldous Law. And, on the very day that the rabbi’s lawyers were due to choose a jury that would hear his case, Alle settled the case.

Rabbi Shapiro couldn’t shake his attorneys’ hands. But he’s very happy about how things turned out.
