Reyna v. St. Joseph

Preeclampsia Medical Malpractice Catastrophe for Young Family

Lupita Reyna was in labor when she arrived at Houston’s St. Joseph Medical Center in July 2009. After giving birth to a daughter, her third child, she was sent home.

But the joy of a new birth vanished within a few days. Mrs. Reyna had a massive seizure that severely damaged her brain and left her in a permanent vegetative state. Her husband was left caring for three young children and his invalid, non-communicative wife.

Mrs. Reyna suffered from preeclampsia, a high blood pressure-related condition that can be deadly if it progresses. Sometimes, the condition goes away after the baby is born. But it did not in Mrs. Reyna’s case and hospital nurses failed to tell her doctor that she was still at risk. So he sent her home.
